Welcome to Blackheath Folk Club
 Home

Who are we?

We are an open mic club meeting every Tuesday at the British Oak pub in Old Dover Road, Blackheath. We are more of an acoustic than a pure folk club. Recent sessions have included virtually every musical genre.

Techy Bit

We have a 300 watt Yamaha PA system with 2 mics and 4 other inputs. If more inputs are needed a Behringer mixer can be made available with prior notice. The space is relatively limited and a four-piece band is probably the optimum.

Want to play?

We operate a first come-first serve system. There are 10 minutes/2 song slots. It is best to arrive before 8.00 to avoid disappointment and ask for Lynne, Sion or Theresa. Alternatively, contact us by e-mail (see Contact section)

We only have one rule we ask peformers to respect. Our excellent host, Peter, prefers people not to publicise gigs in other pubs, which seems fair enough to us.

Resident performers

We don't have any formal residents although there is a healthy number of people who turn up to play most weeks. Included in this number are Simon Goodwin, jazz guitar virtuoso; Jim and Isabelle from the brilliant 'Bruise'; David Bowyer, lead singer of 'the Flying Bricks'; Ron, jazz and blues vocalist extraordinaire; Jim Radford, master of the nautical song and shanty; Fred 'close your eyes and you'd swear it's Bob' Dylan and Sion Humphreys, singer-songwriter.

From time to time we have featured artists who are ususally professional musicians.

Club News

Tuesday (the 5th) was certainly the proverbial night of two halves! It is always difficult holding sessions in pubs in that some punters are not there for the music and we must respect that. However, when some have turned up to support a particular act and fail to show others the respect they pay their friend, performers are justified in feeling a tad annoyed. Youth is no excuse! Heaven preserve me from wishy washy middle class liberals. (take pills and put away soap box) Use our guestbook and tell me if I'm turning in to angry-of-SE3!

It was nice to welcome first-timers Olivia, Richard and Simon (another one!) Simon played a barnstorming set to close the night , following rousing contributions from Simon Hughes, the evergreen Jim, Ted and the Bros Mellow, Bill and Simon Goodwin. Those playing earlier battled personfully (note the inclusive language, Lynne!) against a noisy background. It was great to listen to Lynne play for the first time at the club. Our grateful thanks to regulars for their support and forebearance.

Our ever-obliging host Peter has consulted the committee over  concerns expresed by a resident over noise levels. We are therefore asking all those who come along to leave on tippy-toes, sotto voce.
